Re: Serial Numbers - need identity

Too little information, Jamseby. Not anything Harley made, in 1932, at least. Need photos. Pictures are worth a thousand words. Post a few photos of the engine over all, and of the number in closeup, to Photobucket.com and post the [IMG] image of it over here.
What you posted, 32XL, doesn't make any sense. If it is a Harley v twin, the first "XL," was a 1957, numbered 57XLxxxx. Indian, for the year designation, used a combination of letters instead of digits: A for 1, B for 2, etc, before the serial number. Take photos! You'll get some responses

Sarge, with all due respect (and I have great respect for you and your encyclopediac knowledge of most things Harley) I think you might be barking up the wrong tree.

Because Harley didn't offer an XL until 1957 (sure wish I had one) I'd bet the VIN is more likely to be 32 VL 3332, which makes a lot more sense.

Hey jameseby, does the top of the engine (assuming it is together) have a bunch of tall ridges on top signifying it's a flathead?

Yo, Buzz, yer right. I shoulda told him he's misreading either the 32 or the letters "XL." I just didn't speculate, tho it crossed my mind, that he might be misreading something. That's why I axed for a photo; for the easiest way to get to the bottom of this. A letter "V" might be misread as an "X" for someone not familiar with the script, yup.
Still too little information from which to make any conclusion, eh?
I hope Jamesby, here, comes back with more information.
Harley didn't make many bikes in 1932, at the very bottom of the Great Depression, did they? This would be the 2332nd, or so, I think near the end of their run.

    yes it is a flathead.
I'm working on getting pics uploaded
I have views of sides and ends, top complete with tanks
The engine is all together and did run when I first picked it up, that
was 40+ years ago. Been stored all this time

    Jim,
Photobucket won't let me into album "eby." Password required.
Best would be if you wouod go in there and just copy > paste the "[IMG]" titles of your photos into your new post here, and everyone will be able to see them.
Pass your cursor over your photo, and you will see a windowshade menu of all the different titles. Control C on the "[IMG]" one, start a new post in this thread, here, and Control V the thing into it, and it will appear here. you can test with "Preview Post" down below here in the Reply to thread box.
