Although the vent is in the case, does the case have a boss for said vent?

Below is a link to a thread I started on the Panhead and Flathead forum which should help with further ID but please let me know if youíre still not sure.

C8 is March 1948. So your bike should be a high number. Probably built in April or May.

When was the cut over for the next year? I saw a 110 (really they were closely spaced. ) I believe it is a 1951 gear box.. Am I wrong?

Production usually ended by mid summer (July) with the next years production starting in August for late August /early September delivery. Most years H-D wanted dealers to have the new models on the floor in September.
So an 11-0 ( I added the dash) November 1950 was well into the model year, nearly half of the production was built by the end of the year. Production was not evenly spaced, mixed in were different models, special orders, Police orders, etc.

Rubone My closely spaced was in regards to the date code. more of a 110 than 11 0.

I realize that, hence my dash so people could understand the code. Some people who don't get that stuff might wonder what 110 meant.

I agree. I donít know yet if BT trans cases cast in March 38 had a date code but they wouldnít have a boss for a vent nipple. But when a boss is present, code C and 8 indicate March 48. Thus far on these cases most codes Iíve seen for April 38 through July 48 have spaced characters. This includes Oct 46 but that month not only had them spaced but also unspaced. Why the exception? I do not know.

As of August 48 there seems to have been a change to unspaced characters which appears to have continued through at least March 49 although again thereís a possibility of exceptions. (I have none yet.) I donít know what happened in April-May 49 but by June 49 they went back to spaced characters.

As early as Jan 50 the format changed from letter-number to numbers-only although in the 50s and 60s more than one type of numbers-only format was used. Characters were often spaced and on occasion a hyphen was employed. But sometimes the characters were unspaced as you saw with 110. And they were also unspaced for Oct 50: 100.

NB: obviously the above code info applies to BT trans cases. Often, but not always, it can also apply to other BT aluminium parts. As for Flathead 45ci aluminium parts, sometimes they had the same codes as BT aluminium parts but not always.
