    37 EL Oil Tank

Iím ( finally ) in the process of assembling a 37 EL, the oil feed for this year is on the bottom of the tank. The banjo bolt threads into what looks like a large nut with ( what feels like ) a spring loaded tab in the center of the nut. The large nut spins relatively freely. So my questions are as follows ; is the nut supposed to spin? What is purpose of center tab?

The not should tighten, not free spin. The check valve in the middle is intended to keep the oil in the tank if the line is disconnected. The idea being you can remove the line, then get ready to drain the tank without all the oil running everywhere.

That quick-disconnect oil drain was a one-year feature, 1937. Had a lot of problems including shutting off and starving the new recirculating-oil engines, from what I was told long ago.and they were were taken out and replaced with plain screw-in fittings. Has to be a Shop Dope or something on that. Also makes an original valve kinda rare.

Thanks for response , finally figured out what was going on. The weld on the bung that fitting screwed into was broken, allowing bung to spin. If the valve is rare I imagine the screw in fittings are in the same category, will do some research.

I havenít found a Shop Dope regarding the valve but there was one about the screen inside some 37 tanks.
