Found this on the NET, I don't know if it's real or Memorex.

In 1936 1,704 knuckleheads were produced, 1,526 of which were the hotter EL version, while only 152 of the E and but 26 of the ES versions were built.

Larry, The Legend Begins has the same amounts as those posted above but Legend also says its own info in that area is not to be regarded as totally accurate. Another model mentioned in Legend is the 36EM (for Midget car racing) but the book doesn’t say how many were produced.

In my collection I have a photo of 27++ but it isn’t great. (And I don’t mean the fake 2749 at the Harley museum. )
Highest I have where the photo is better is 26++.
I’ve heard of a couple at 29++ but I have no pictures of them.

I get the impression you may have run across a 36 Knuckle with a very high SN? If so can you post a partial photo please.

Somewhere about 1700 is the most common number seen.

15 or 20 years ago, a gentleman from Florida compiled an occasional newsletter called The 36 EL Registry.
I have a few of them, I don't know when or why he quit. I suppose it may have been a privacy thing.

He is a popular and often contributing member here, maybe he will chime in on the subject.

In the Presidents message to the Shareholders he states that slightly less that slightly less than two thousand were sold.
The highest number I have a picture of is 2938.

I'm that gentleman in Flarr-duh who published "The 36EL Registry" bi-monthly for three years in the early 1990s; eighteen issues. Chris Haynes supplied contact info on 36 owners he had already knew and we were on our way. Wife Lisa and I set out to find out how many 36 motors were left, and, "just how special were those first-year Knuckleheads?"
We got stories and pictures of '36 engines in show choppers, drag racers, quarter-midgets and bare cases with good numbers to fine original-paint bikes and restorations of every degree. But it was just a survey; and it stirred up interest in 36ELs and everything Knucklehead.
We axed for surviving 36 E-model serial numbers, just counting OEM engine cases. We had 140 reported. 1002 to (higher than the 2749 restamp in the MoCo Museum): 2769, 2838 and 2903 No photos, just decade-old reports) But for total number, the numbers were found are what you read above, something over 1700 & under 2000.

About the factory's 36. When I first saw it a few decades ago I surmised that it was not kosher because it had a late number on a first design case. In the decades since then i have found several high numbers on the first design case. What caused the return to the first design case on very late machines is unknown. I have seen enough of them to convince me that it did happen.
