Thread: Help Identify this frame

  1. Help Identify this frame

I just picked up a Frankenstein HD frame cheap at Super Swap in upstate NY last Saturday. It has a top engine mount two digit code L6. I read in another forum the L6 code is a replacement frame for 58-64 made in DEC '66 and this seems perfectly reasonable given what most of the frame looks like. But here's the rub: It's a rigid frame. The back axle plates look aftermarket. Crazy custom tabs welded on in places. But if this frame was an HD swing arm frame (58-64) I can't see where it was cut and spliced with the new hard tail section. I'll try to include some pics below...

    Modified duoglide frame

Yes. That's what I'm thinking. But not modified by HD, right?. The hard tail is aftermarket and done some time after. It's not clear to me exactly where it was cut and spliced--but it must have been done. Anyway, I took it home for $170 and I guess it's suitable for putting all my filthy hippie chopper parts on it. There's nothing particularly valuable or worth saving here.

H-D never "modified" any frames so that isn't even a consideration. Nothing much left there so go for it.

Welcome to the forum. On several different sites I’ve mentioned L6 on a 58–64 style replacement frame but it was in standard condition and here it is.

On your frame, is the left footboard mount original?

Looks like the mount for the rear of the gas tanks has been moved back?

Left axle plate appears to have provision for a hydraulic drum brake.

Is there any forging ID on your front engine mount?
Is there any forging ID at the back of the rear engine mount, just in front of the holes that accommodate the trans plate? And do I see three mounting holes or two for the front of the trans plate? Thanks.
