    I do know the strap is parallel to the top rail.

    I thought so as well until looking at the pics in Palmer's book,show a little wonky in all of the 1940 pics.

    The holes on the toolbox do not line up with the top edge of the box.
    I measure about 1/8" difference at the wide end of the box vs the narrow end.
    This says the strap would be wonky to the frame to make the top of the box line up to the frame.

    Back to the valve cover fitment.I ordered the Eastern springs as shown right of pic.The wire size is similar but the OD is about .035 smaller.The spring pressure is less.The compressed spring is a little taller at the overlap.They did get me closer to fitting.......I cut the overlap back to no overlap like the cad springs.I then ground a little off the thickness near the ends.I also cut about .010 off the diameter of the spring top to seal spacers.I also did file the tangs like Charles suggested.They are working fine now!Thanx Charles

    The anchor was applied by the Navy, Not by H-D. As stated above it was not applied to everything.

    Chris,do they all have the US on the anchor?I thought I had seen them with just an anchor?Did any of the Coast Gaurd bikes have the anchor?

    I have seen both with and without US.
