This is an interesting one... I picked up a re-print of the WLC maintenance manual and it has a picture of a 1942wlc with tall round air filter

Correct. Round for a 42 WLC and rectangular for a 43 WLC..

Yes but usually you see the short round filter on the 42wlc not the tall 41 that I'm running

And that's where the confusion is from; this photo was taken using a 41WLA as a mule.
Just look at the long front forks, the long T-piece (seat) and spacers between forks and front fender.
    Read Palmer's book, SE Militairy p34, 114 & 325(note 4).

Sure he could've mistakenly mention the tall oil filter in combo with the 42WLC, but in his updated work he doesn't repeat that statement.
By the time the 41WLA was tested and the Army shared their results to H-D to incorperate them into the 42WLA, it was found the tall filter was prone to damage/ failure during manoeuvres..hence the redesigned smaller filter.
First the louvred one #1401-41, and eventually redesigned as #1401-42M with the large cap.

But as mentioned before; it's YOUR bike, do to/ with it as YOU like.

Good call on the front fender spacers I didn't notice those. Yes definitely a 41wla used in this pic

I've got a mint original printing of that manual.
If you look closely you'll notice the tail light, front marker light
and fender mounted toolbox are drawn in by hand.
also long seat T is incorrect among other bit.
