Big Spark When Connecting Neg cable last on 66 FLH

I am installing a new H12 AGM battery in my 66 FLH, when I connect the neg cable last I get a huge spark, is something grounded or what, I disconnected the battery in my 68 just to make sure I was doing it right, no spark on the 68, any help from you electrical gurus would be greatly appreciated, cycle electrics has always been my weakness, thanks in advance, Larry

If you have a fuse or circuit breaker, and it didn't open, then the problem isn't likely with anything fed by those devices. I'd be looking for problems related to heavy cables or starting system.

Try unhooking your Batt. wire from your regulator.

    Larry,
Did you do any other work on the bike at the same time.
It is rare these days, but some batteries have been know to be incorrectly labeled for polarity.

No other work, plus I put volt meter on it and it tested at 12.78, so terminals must be correct, plus I had just ridden the bike with the old battery last week, then after sitting for a week it went from 12+ volts to .01 volts, so is something drawing the voltage or is something, ie; hot, thanks, Larry

Sounds like you do have a problem.
Follow the suggestions from other members and you will eventually find it.

Larry, After you find out what's not working (like a stuck point set in the mechanical regulator), one thing you should do is smear some clear RTV on the studs & nuts on the starter solenoid cap (let it dry before putting the rubber cap on). The carbon in the black rubber & silver in the silver one, will slowly allow the battery to discharge to ground over a 4-6 week period. Doc
