    74 vs 80 ci Shovelhead

I was pretty happy with my old 76 FLH thatís had a recent top end rebuild and an electronic ignition installed until I rode my friends 80ci 1979 Police bike.

The 79 seemed to have a lot more torque and grunt. Both bikes are stock so it got me thinking is the 80ci that much better than the 74 or am I missing something.

I thought maybe it was carb jetting, hence my previous post and then I thought maybe itís gearing. Iím running a 51 tooth sprocket on the back which should make it more punchy through the gears. Iím waiting for him to tell me whatís on the back of his.

So the question is, is there a noticeable differed between the 74 and the 80 and are Police bikes geared differently to standard bikes.

We didnít do a straight line top speed test it was just general road running and going up through some hills in that 50 - 60 mph area

    Thanks Dave

    1. yes
    2. it's not 74 and 80, it's 73.66 (3.4375 X 3.96875) and 81.69 (3.498 X 4.25), 10.9% larger
    3. in addition to the displacement, the rod ratio is smaller: 1.75:1 vs 1.874:1

I believe the police bike has a different grind on the cam.

May be a closed subject now, but I will say I had a 1977 Police 74ci, and it was as strong as the 1979 80ci, non police that I have now. Neither one of them would win any races though, lol!

Iím interested in the cam comments in regards to the police bikes. I assumed they were the same as the normal models just with lights, sirens etc.

We need someone to confirm the cam stuff and I wonder if you could buy the police cams if there were such a thing

Re: 74 vs 80 ci Shovelhead

Police bike in the '70s were exactly the same as Civilian models other than police equipment, no engine differences. I walked away from the MoCo's products in 1980 and never looked back so cannot say if they ever tried something different after that point. Just keep in mind that if such an item existed don't you think it would be common? Or talked about?...

Evo Cop bikes had a different cam that you can feel in the seat of your pants
