    Good stuff Robbie.The owners son took the float off & lost the nut & washer.Appears to be a 3-40 ???
    He also had the float on backwards & upside down...this pic shows correct orientation.The other end has a square socket that fits over the assaembly to keep the orientation

    Very interesting bike and thread. I have a very late '57 XL project. I think about the last one made - 57XL3293. Production was 1983 XL's and 418 XLA's. I watch your thread with interest as there are quite a few one year parts. Do you think yours still has the small valve heads? Most of them were thrown away I think. Someday when I get it done, It will look very nice next to my original '57 Pan. Make a nice pair.

    The '57 Sportster brochure is a fold up piece too big to scan (17X23-1/2) but here are pics of both sides opened.

    He has the aftermarket bags, original tank emblem & other missing bits that were on it.
    You could order 1957 XL's in a solid color without the white panel. Are you CERTAIN that this isn't original paint?

    I know the paint options.This is not OP.Not even close.Locally there is a '57 motor # under 1200 & as high as 344X.Thanx Robbie,I had that poster & did not photograph it.
