    Anybody wanna watch a 51FL go together .. ??

    Total motor rebuild on an oldie ...
    Going to up the cubes just a bit ...

    This rebuild will be chucked full of up-grades....
    Will be most interesting to see how it will go back together.

    First off was to see what we had to work with...??



    To say the least the Ol Girl was tried....

    A good wash up went down and then a good look at all the parts and pieces ...



    Had a nice surprise lurking inside the critter... Must had been done in it's early life...
    It already had a stroker in it .... A poor boy's stroker ...

    What some gear head did was to build a crank from using Harley parts that was already around...



    What we see in the above photo is Two right side U flywheels ... Nice way to gain 6 more cubes and have a lighten set of wheels..
    The jugs was bored 0.060" over for using 80 inch Shovel pistons ...
    Being the owner was wanting a bit more cubies than what the 4-9/32" stroke U wheels could give, none of this crank was going back in...

    T&O 4-1/2" was our choice ...



    It was my idea to get away from the weak One Inch Sprocket Shaft and go to the later spline shaft...
    That way we would be riding on a Timken bearing ...

    That mod required a new left side case ...



    Never was fond of building a Hot-Rod using the 48-52 Oem case cause of how the Mo-Co made the Top-End oil returns in the left case.... They had a world of busted cases come back to them and in 53 started making the case solid with no holes drilled in em which in turn making em super weak...

    Being we sold off the old crank to a Fella in Canada (Going in a 47 Knuck) there went the rods ...
    Needed a rod set for our build....

    A bit of overkill went down in that area ...



    Along with the sprocket shaft...

    What we did was to order the Flywheels with the L82-up taper for the huge foot area in the wheel...



    Stock for 1951 on the left and a special made shaft on the right....
    What makes it special is the L82 taper on a 55-64 shaft....

    Now, we have a killer lower end, at least on the work side of the crank (Drive Side)

    Now on up with seeing what we have to work with .... The heads...

    I sold the "Poor Boys" stroker with the Panhead jugs, went as a package deal...
    Now a new set of jugs would be on the list of parts to get...

    A hard look at the Oem heads went down and I deemed them to be Trott-Line sinkers ...
    I could had reclaimed them, but they needed all kinds of work and the cost would dang near be as much as a new set by the time I was done...

    Also the cam cover was in poor shape with screw holes broke out, again a new one would be the ticket...



    These heads uses the Shovel jugs, so I got a nice set of 80" Shovel S&S jugs for the build....
    The 39 Knuck Smoothie cam cover I sent to my Chrome guy for some shinny....

    Motor came with a S&S Super-B carb ...
    Must have been on it for a coon's age...



    Did a rebuild kit and also added a pumper ...



    The re-pop pumper did have a problem that stuck it's ugly head up ...



    Throttle screw was just about missing it's stop ...



    A little welding was the cure for that...

    Another problem poked it's ugly head up with the S&S jugs ...

    Really had nothing to do with S&S but for how they was making the bottom flange ...
    The combo of parts is where the problem showed itself...



    See the trench on the right side case of the rear deck... ??
    If using the Oem jugs there would had been no problems ...



    But S&S jugs are not made the same as Oem..



    Ok, alright ... Gotta fix that ....







    Looking better than the day I pulled it out of the shipping crate ..



    Next to do is to line-lap the pinion case race...





    Timken loaded up the best ....

    Stamped his old numbers on the new case..
    His Old case will be sent back to him so he can make a wall clock for his shop ...

    A check for the swing of the crank-pin nut was done ..



    As long as I'm fuc ... errrrr .... screwing around with the right side case.
    Cam bushing will get replaced. Sweat it in, pin it and line reamed is on the menu ...

    Since you changed the left case why didn't you upgrade and use a big bearing right case? It would have gotten rid of that splined pinion as well and given options on setting lash in the timing case. It would have prevented that oil trough issue also.

    Owner wanted to use the 51 case ...

    I think it was because of the bike's history, he kinda grew up with that bike in his hometown, he knew the PO for years on end ...
    Bike was chopped in the 70's and he's keeping it looking like it was ....

    With me doing away with most all of the og parts, about the only thing I did keep from the motor that is 51, is the right side case..

    History lives on ... (Somewhat)



    Pinned & Reamed ...
    Will be getting to the case breather window much later in the build. The open and closing timing will be checked and the case window matched to the S&S gear window..
