XE 35 is a forging number used for 1936–47. Are there any markings on the other side of the steering head? Also look for markings on the other forgings.

Although your frame has received a bit of butchery I can see that it is a late Knucklehead frame. There were no serial numbers on these frames.

I have a motor parts for a 1940 knucklehead. If I put that motor in this bike would it be considered a 1940 or does the frame need to match the motor. I guess what Im saying is what makes it the year the motor or the frame?

Re: What would this number on the neck indicate?

Knuckleheads 1936–47 were originally registered by the engine serial number. They had no frame number so the engine determined the model year.

Does the Knucklehead you mentioned have serial number 40EL4864? If that is the serial number then it is not consistent with factory stamping and the left crankcase is not 1940 but instead appears to be somewhere from late-41 to 47 inclusive. Can you post photos of the belly numbers on those cases please and we may be able to tell what year the cases are. Thanks.

The case is mounted to a mount on the cart. I will have to take it off to check.

That number on the case isn't a factory stamped VIN. Was there a title for that case?

Replacement OEM case on the engine. 1939 and down blind races with 1942 and up long ribs. Jerry
