Thread: Front Brake Light Switch Blues.

    Front Brake Light Switch Blues.

I'm helping a friend work on his 1979 Super Glide. I haven't owned or worked on an older bike like this for years. One of his problems is the front brake light switch 72001-69B. He said it hasn't worked for years. I'm a strong believer in safety equipment and want to fix it. As I remember these switches just never lasted. I believe brake fluid fumes or residue attacked the plastic in the switch. In these many, many years, has any company made one of these switches that does last and stay working? Any ideas?

All the aftermarket suppliers have them.

I know you can buy replacement ones EVERYWHERE. BUT are they of the same poor quality as the ones I remember being available years ago. I don't want another piece of crap that will last about 2 days before it goes to hell. Has their quality improved. Do they last as long as the rear brake light switches do???
Can anybody say, yes I replaced my switch with one from XXX company 3 years ago and it still works just fine? That's what I'm looking for. A good switch made to last.

The key is soldering without destroying the new switch.
I have installed many of the repop crappy switchs with good results.

What duffeycycles says for sure. Too much heat from the soldering gun and your switch melts; too much solder and it is brittle as hell

So, I have one modern bike that had a front brake light switch and I disconnected it so when I am braking hard in traffic I can use my foot at the same time to flash the brake light, something you can't do while stopping fast if you have a front brake light switch!

You need a front brake light switch for the DMV inspection (if it came from the factory with one). Other than that, what's the point?
If you're braking hard enough to actually slow down using only the front brake, safety isn't a big concern for you anyway.

It is for the car ramming up your backside. Front brakes have great stopping power.

That's the point Chris. Use both brakes... bikes stops better, light comes on.

Sometimes I feel the need to FLASH my brakelight to alert the asshole behind me. That is why I disconnect the front one. If I need to stop fast I can flash the light. It works for me. Your Method May Vary.
