New Project Followed me home...1952 Panhead Custom

    .
In a previous post I asked about this garage find '52 Panhead potential...and what I should offer the seller...
Well...the price was great and the title was there...I could not refuse so, home it went.

This project will by no means be correct this or correct that but, hopefully just a cool rider.
...cases are '48 & '52, front head is '55 and rear head is '58
    ...BDL belt primary
    ...unknown 4 spd. trans.
...repop frame which I hope to replace.
...not sure about the springer, it's over quite a lot and not sure who made it but, the tube are not that big.

Looks like a left over from early 70s when long narrow forks were "the" thing to do. Have fun with it.
To have the right to do something is not the same as to be right in doing it.

Cool for a project. Dump that 3" belt, they are death on tapered shaft engines!

    Thanks for the advise Robbie.
I have never had a belt primary bike and thought maybe this would be the first...the 3" does stick out quite a bit and I was skeptical of the left pant leg trap

Again I'm new to this, could I just go with a narrower belt or is ANY size belt drive not recommended?
Do you suggest going back to chain primary?

Thanks again, any input is greatly appreciated.
    Derek.

No expert, but you said "any input," so ...

I have the 1-1/2" belt on my primary that came with the bike. It fits inside the primary cover so it's not a pants trap, and my favorite go-to mechanic says it's quieter and more reliable than a chain, so it wasn't worth the cost to me to convert it back to chain primary.

I'm not at all convinced the primary cover that's on the bike is the one that was there when it rolled off the factory floor, but you never know.

    Derek,
Nothing wrong with a belt drive, but the 3" type on an early engine puts too much load further out creating lots of extra stress on the main bearings and tends to side load the crank in the cases. A regular 1-1/2 inch is in the same location as a standard chain so not so much of an issue, and that bike doesn't make enough power to need a greater belt width. I have run a belt on my 47FL for over 25 years. Setting it up properly is the biggest issue.

    Thanks Robbie, few more questions
What is the setup that you are running on the '47 ?
    - what belt manufacturer
    - what width (1.5" ?)
    - is the primary open or enclosed with some venting?
    - what are your pulley sizes (...also, are you running a stock rear drum brake * sprocket?)
...and how is it in the city and on the highway?

I have a couple Pans with belt drives and a 23 tooth trans sprockets. I've drilled a few cooling holes in the inner primary cover, and leave out 2 derby cover screws.
