Thread: Olive drab paint - source

  1. Re: Olive drab paint - source

    Chris,
Is the paint you got from Finish Master correct for that period of Harleys, how does it look? Is it a base coat /clear coat?
I was about to bring them a chip that Steve Slocombe had sent me a while back to match......
    Thanks,
    Ed

I didn't see mention of what year Harley you are painting. 'Military Olive Drab' is the color name Harley-Davidson used on their motorcycles starting in 1917. I don't know what year they discontinued it, but it is very different than the green H-D used in WW2.

I use a company in Texas for my Olive drab paint for my Jeeps. I called and ask for Olive Drab and the guy says" What shade? I sell 150 different shades!". I am on the road and will not return until 10-15 if you need the #.

It is my understanding the gloss was used state side and the drab was used in the field. TM9 Ordinance Products, LLC. out of Exton, PA had both.

I wonder if we are over thinking the paint question.

What worked for me was I took a part with paint I knew was correct (in this case the oil cap) to a reputable paint supplier. They colour matched it and supplied a litre of paint (just over 2 pints) plus 2 rattle cans. The service was overnight and done on the premises.

I painted the horn, rear stand and tool box which were all poorly matched. and the colour match is near perfect.

    Anyway, my 2 cents worth.
