Re: Look what followed me home from Opotiki!

20 years ago when I worked as an ASE auto mechanic we had many WW2 vets as customers. One guy in particular related a story about his return trip from Europe at the end of the war. They were on an aircraft carrier and they were ordered to push every jeep, motorcycle, tank, and any other vehicle overboard into the Atlantic ocean. When they question their superiors they were told "No wants old military vehicles! Everyone has suffered during the war and we need to jump start the economy with new vehicles."

Common story, and not just vehicles. Refrigerators, stoves, washing machines, anything that could upset consumer business back home.

When I was in the Marines in the early 70's I was stationed at NAS New Orleans which was the headquarters for all USMC Air Wing Reserves. All surplus equipment was sent to us and we were told to dispose of it in such a way that no business or people were harmed by the sale of it which usually meant scrapping it.
