    1940 Indian Chief - CHP Police Motorcycle

    Hi everyone

    After 7 years of restoring my 1940 Indian Chief it is finally finished.

    How it was found before it was shipped to Australia.

    Restored from basket case that i purchased in 2010 from a guy in Hollister California.
    Lots of work and looking for parts to get it to where it is today.

    Along the way have picked up some original parts which are now installed on the bike.

    Motor is std 74" Chief
    Original CDOxxxx M cases
    Original RM 4051P Magneto
    Running Bonne Cams and Lifters
    Running a Beck M6BA Carb
    new old stock winter screen
    S & M Lamp Co of Los Angles red marker lamps front and rear.
    Motolamp Headlight
    Sterling Siren
    Siren Pedal

    Running 4.50 x 18 tyres on original rims.

    Have a Motorola Radio Head but looking for some replica or original radio boxes
    Or plans if anyone has such a drawing.

    Sweet Chief! It looks like a timing hole plug in the left case?

    Outstanding! To go for the police model is a nice move, not something you see very often, or at all for that matter. Probably made your job more of a challenge but it looks great!

    Yes it is, which makes me think that the engine cases were changed at some stage in its life.
    Being a police bike most likely the engine did a lot of work, was quite possible it was changed during service.

    Bob Starke did a 1940 Chief, police motorcycle. It was featured in a past AMCA magazine. I know he had trouble with the radio stuff, but I don't think that is any different for a someone doing a police Harley-Davidson. My hat is off to you for tackling such a tough challenge. Looks great.

    Not an Indian guy but that is a beautiful bike, especially considering your starting point. Hope it rides as sweet as it looks.
