Thread: My first race meet

    My first race meet

In August I purchased a 1940 W class C racer with a view to go vintage racing. The bike has quiet a lot of racing history over here and has also been over to Daytona.

This weekend was my first race and after coming last in the first two races I managed to get a bit more competitive and pass a couple of people in races 3 and 4.

Now I know that the bike is competitive I need to improve my race craft and I'm going to make a few little changes which are:
    - Take off the big tanks and put on smaller WR style tanks
    - Move to alloy wheels rather than the old heavy ones
    - Change the exhaust as no one seems to run the WR flat track exhaust and it sticks out too far. Not sure if I'll go 2 pipes or 2 into 1

Here's a few pics of the day

Way to go Dave! If you're not finishing last you are doing something right. My guess is that practice is probably your best bet as far as going faster, it sounds like you improved with the seat time you got at the event. Nice looking bike too! Enjoy. JF in NC

Way to go Dave!! A couple suggestions..
Narrow tanks won't make you go faster, and they were standard fitment pre WR.
An air cleaner housing will make you go faster, dead air space breathes better than that short horn you have on there, turbulence destroys flow. Bolt the plate on with that radiused horn.
Alloy rims aren't legal here on pre'40 but if they are there use them, but try to get rid of that terribly heavy Big Twin brake. At least use a WL type but a BSA or other works better for much less weight.
    Have fun!!

What is the red box on your front fork?

    Re: My first race meet

Thanks Robbie, I suppose the best way to make the tanks lighter would be to put less in them! Maybe my hard earned cash is better spent in another direction than WR style tanks. The bike had an air cleaner (K&N) and cover on it but I look them off as I thought it might breath better without it. I'll put the cover back on. In regards to pipes do you think a 2 into 1 or two singles works better. All the factory photos show 2 into 1 and I guess they did the research. The bike beside mine was running allow rims so they can be used and everyone seems to be using the big twin brake for stopping power I guess. The bike beside mine has a lovely Billet Aluminum Front Brake drum from Antique Speed and Machine

Rob - the red box on the front fork is the timing mechanism

Good for you Dave. 2 into 1 always seems to deliver the best, except maybe drag racing.
