Thread: 41WL...civilian or South African UDF bike?

41WL...civilian or South African UDF bike?

    So there's this bike; a higher 6000-ish 41WL VIN.
How can one be sure if this is just a normal civvy bike or one of those longforked UDF WL's?
BP mentions the south africans got two batches of them, the first containing some 2350 and the second another 1000 WL's...but there's no mentioning of VIN-ranges...
    Anyone?

look for numbers stamped on cam cover and look for the military broad arrow.

No marks nor numbers...but BP also states not all those UDF bikes got 'extra' markings..
How can one be absolutely sure?

If you can not prove it,no one can disprove it.
Claim it and shout it and someone will come along and say you are wrong. This may drag info out of the wood work.

In all seriousness, Give Paul at American Cycle Fabrication a call.He is from South Africa and was involved with most of the bikes coming out of the country. If he does not know,no one will.
    Good luck

It could've been and probably was (re)built several times in the past...
    But no; no long forks.
Just wanted to be sure based purely on its VIN..

I know of two South African 41WL bikes in the high number range between 41WL7726 and 41WL83xx.
The high number bike has the long front fork, the low number was changed to civilian with a short front fork.

One was listed on eBay not that long ago and I've added the VIN of that bike.
As you can see on the right side of the VIN is the the South African Broad Arrow mark as listed on page 364 of Bruce Palmer 'How to restore your Military HD' second edition.

    Thank you for this picture.
I haven't had time to investigate if other markings are on the casings, alas; not all SAUDF WL's got extra markings..
Shame there isn't a known VIN-range to tell from..
