...back to the wheels for a moment, I debated whether to paint the spokes and nipples before lacing, or wait until after. I guess it doesn't make much difference because in my case I'll need to paint, or touch up, the spokes and nipples again due to all the battle scars incurred during lacing and tensioning:

Almost all the spoke nipples got scraped up during inserting or tensioning:

...and the spoke "elbows" were scraped up, as well as some nicks and chips caused by yours truly:

Conclusion, in my case maybe painting after lacing would have been just as good!

Looking forward to removing the pinion gear! Sort of a mangled mess and I'm not certain if there's even a nut on there at this point. Either someone didn't realize the nut was LH threads, or something was loose in the cam case (I'm thinking the former!)

    Hi Harry

Looks like a mangled "Pinion shaft pinion washer screw" as Walker Machine calls it (it seems more like a bolt to me.)Pinion washer screw.jpg

Thanks Dave! I didn't even consider it was a bolt threaded into the pinion shaft, later years have a nut. (...might make it more difficult to remove, too!)

It’s a bolt on my 101, the bolt was easy to take off, the gear not so much. I ended up having to make a special puller to get the gear off. Let me know if you want any pics of it disassembled, mine is still off.

Thanks Dana, I'm also going to try and cobble together a puller. Greer's has them, but that's a last resort to purchase a one time use tool!

I made a tool to remove the pinion from some scraps I had lying around, and it worked... pinion gear is off. (...after you pick yourself off the floor from laughing, just realize it took about 3 minutes and with no reading glasses to make this puller... I did say "cobble together a puller" and I meant it!)

A good tool doesn't have to be pretty, but it is beautiful when it does the job you made it for. Thanks for the great pictures, Harry.
