Thread: 1920 Big X on ebay

Re: 1920 Big X on ebay

I talked to my Excelsior guru in Colorado today, and that was one of the first things we discussed. He confirmed what I thought, and that was definitely my old friend Charlie's Series 20. I feel sorry for the buyer because that bike is really a Whitman's sampler of a Series 20 Excelsior motorcycle. As I understand it, the seller got that bike, and all of the spare parts collected from the deceased owner's estate. He then had the tire guy in Chattanooga, and his henchmen restore it, in exchange for all the spare parts. Obviously, they don't know their asses from a hole in the ground, sh!t from shineola, or a hammer from a eggbeater. I regret my early comment, and my defense of this bike for the seller's reputation. Buyers need to be educated about expensive vintage motorcycles so they don't get hosed. Good bikes deserve to sell for a lot of money, poorly restored bikes need to be sold with an honest, and truthful description so the buyer can make an educated offer. Ben, BBins has probably cracked the Excelsior frame code that is stamped just under the seat, on the frame forging. If the new owner is reading this; look at the bottom digit of that string and it should tell you what year that frame is.
So ya don't think she was worth $42k do ya.
What do you think the new owner will do when he finds out what he bought ?
I sent the seller a link to this post so the seller knows what it is and I expect the buyer will soon to if he doesn't already know and doesn't care.
And for $42k it has to be collector with deep pockets.
