Thread: White Smoking Knuckle

Another thing to check is the tappets. Pull a pushrod cover and make sure there is not a hole in the top of the tappet. For some reason Eastern made tappets with holes top and bottom, there fore killing vacuum to pull oil out of heads. I have filled with mig welder, tig would be better. Some have tapped for set screw. Best is to replace. I have wondered about Sifton tappets, has anyone had experience? S&S are the best probably, but expensive.

where is this thick white smoke coming from? is it coming out of the exhaust? IE. burning the oil out of the exhaust , or is it coming off of the heads or the headers. In my opinion if there was a vacuum issue there would be oil pouring out of the tins and down the heads onto the front or rear headers. We need to know where exactly this smoke is coming from to further accurately troubleshoot.

    Hi Tomcat1

The oil is comming out the muffler/Exhaust, i installed the rings myself and im sure they are correct.
Could it be that the crankcase is `overflowing`, the flow on the return to tank is good- then again if the rings are installed correct that shouldn`t be a problem.
Im not that interested in starting to do any adjustments of the pump either since my knowledge is down to Zero.
I will start her up again when i get back home from work (sea) and check the top end

    Sailorman,

If the bike smokes heavily when it gets hot it's usually the rings . On start up its the guides . You say you have a replica oil pump , if it's the one Tedds sells , there are no adjustments, it's a fixed regulator . If you want to check for a crankcase that's overfilling , run engine to operating temperature, shut it down , then pull the case drain plug and measure how much oil is in case . Good luck

Do you remember what rings you used? I think a compression leak down test (cylinder differential test) is next.
