    1913 California Motorcycle Plate

Here's a pretty rare item for all you California types into old motorcycles - a 1913 plate on ebay.

Not sure that I have ever seen one like this before. If interested visit http://cgi.ebay.com/VERY-RARE-1913-C...3A1|240%3A1318

That actually isn't a license plate. It is a city tax. License plates are issued by the state, not by cities. Prior to 1914 the state would issue you a license number. Which would be painted in a prescribed manner on the rear fender. the first state issued motorcycle license plates in CA were 1914.

  3. My grandpa used to have a Los Angeles registration tag that same size and shape on a 1909 Excelsior that he bought from Floyd Clymer. I wonder how early THEY started taxing the motorcycle rider ?

Local goverments have always been looking for anything they can tax to make more money. Many cities in CA continued to tax any vehicle that was used commercially in their city. Even if the business was not located in their city. I used to drive for a film processing company located in Hollywood and we had to buy a "Business Tax" decal to have on our truck when were were making deliveries in Culver City, CA.
