    65-66 Shocks Cad or Zinc

I'm in the process of restoring four or five sets of 65-66 rear shock absorbers. I was cleaning the parts with the intent of getting them off to the cad plater, but it appears that all of my original NOS shock parts were zinc plated. Of course, I like the look of cad much better but want the correct finish. Can anyone enlighten me as to the correct finish for these parts?

I'm also doing a set of the pre-65 flat tops, and these appear to be cad--correct?

I'd like to hear more about what you are doing to 'restore' your 66 shocks? Are you just working on the external appearance or have you disassembled them?

Are you selling any of these? I may be in for a set for my 66 FLH.

Did you happen to take any pictures of the process? Would love to see what you are doing for my own project. Knucky beat me to the next question, so I guess I'll be second in line if the answer is yes? Or, if you have this process figured out, maybe an exchange of mine for yours or a rebuild of mine? I have a 66 FLH as well...

I don't believe he is "rebuilding" the hydraulic units from his post.

I believe the 65-66 lower adjusters are cad.

I would say they were cad plated. The zinc plating didn't start until the early 70s.

All of the ones I have are clearly zinc plated. I don't know if that's because they are replacement parts or if they were all that way. Need a definitive answer to proceed.

That is correct. The shocks are quite crude and about all the dampers do is keep them from bouncing. Just sorting out an using the best parts I have. Started with eight sets plus a pile of NOS pieces, and will be able to make five good sets, four of which I need--one for my partner in this endeavor and three for my bikes.
