And now I can say, "We are not alone"... A happy Frank Zappa song title reference there!

It's hard for this Milwaukee born boy to like anything other than the H-D Hydra-Glide, Brooks Stevens designed and my grandfather had a hand in testing and development of the Hydra-Glide in H-D's experimental department.

You can add me to the list as well. One of the appeals of the Hydra-Glide are the clean lines and design despite the bulk. After BMW's successful hydraulically damped fork in '35 it was inevitable that the rest of the world would shift that way. To its credit H-D made a functional good looking version although not without teething problems. The Vard looked too cobbled together and clunky. I have passed on them several times over the years (but I should have bought them to sell to the "hipsters" for the big bucks!) because I could never envision putting them on anything I had.

Amazing event .... Motorcycle Day in Livermore, CA in 1911 .... hard to believe that there where 1500 motorcycles near this town in 1911.

This is the photographer setting up to take the picture.

People getting ready for the picture.

    Final picture.

I broke it down for a better view in the next post

Video (shows picture , no movement) on youtube, still going on today.

That accessory catalog should probably be in the "More Paper Fun" thread.

Thank you for the incredible 1911 San Francisco motorcycle pictures, Sidecar. I love straining my eyes trying to identify the different brands. I noticed a good showing of Flying Merkels.

Eric I always like your informative posts so I will respond from the cold North. I do not like the Vard or even the Ben Benson front ends ( that was then, this is now) but in reality Mr Benson a machinist from lowly Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada had the patent during WW2. He sold several hundred locally now prized possessions. He also had a "thing" with Harley.. I'll let it go at that. I have all the original copies from the estate in the 1980's and have been pressured to write the story. But in this legal age, I am hesitant. I met the man once and many considered him to be a misunderstood genius.Ben Benson front ends, could be bought for an Indian or HD, 45 or 74 in the early 40's.... Have owned several. always put the bike back to stock...but lately around here they are gold... enough said

One more thing, I loved the Frank Zappa quote, I was once listed in the local phone book under Frank Zappa...I was a true follower.....and he owned a cool knuckle..Bought Mothermania I think in '68....
