Economy was important in this 1911 Silent Gray Fellow ad

Robbie, is that 1918 Enthusiast a recent addition to your archives? Does it mention where the cover photo was shot?

H-D economy advertising dates back to 1908 when they set the F.A.M. economy record of 50 miles on 1 quart and 1 ounce of gasoline. They claimed a fuel operating cost of less than one-tenth of a cent per mile.

I think H-D made realistic fuel mileage claims based on the road conditions of the day. Dirt roads kept your speeds down to a reasonable, and safe limit. In 1918, everyone who could own a motorcycle, or car had vivid memories of the horse age and knew what a magic carpet the car, and motorcycle were. Today, on modern highways you'll be run over if you're doing less than 75 mph. No one cares about fuel mileage today and only care about fuel availability. That is not a political statement as everyone, from every political view point wants to fly, drive, or boat whenever, wherever, however they please. If they say anything different, they are full of shit and they have never been more than 5 miles from their house

I'll look through it and see if they give a location.

Don't dig too hard Robbie, sometimes they offer a brief caption or description of the cover photo inside the magazine.

The MoCo's most "economical" offering for 1918! ..

Dave, the most interesting article in it is the mileage record set. I'll post it tomorrow if I get a chance. Hard to believe!

Wasn't the mileage record from 1908 set by Walter Davidson?

Walter set an endurance record for sure. Combination of distance and reliability against time, of which fuel and oil use were part.

From the H-D Museum website timeline...

Three days after Walter Davidson makes perfect score winning 7th annuual F.A.M. endurance contest, Walter sets F.A.M. economy record at 188.234 mpg. They were still touting this 1908 economy record in 1911 ads.
