Thread: Front primary sprocket seal

  1. Re: Front primary sprocket seal

    Morning gents,

I know this is an old thread, but honestly it is the best one I can find on the Forum for this job. I have a leak from the old oil slinger and I am looking to replace it with the new style seal from 45 Restoration. All of the above is helpful but not 100% illuminating. I have also reviewed:

From what I have read, installation seems to be easy enough, though not clear if the retainer clip goes in before the seal (for the bearings) or after for the seal.

But the big question is removing the original clip and oil slinger from an assembled motor in the frame. Bike is a runner, just looking to remove a leak. No issues getting down to the slinger, but looking for suggestions for removing the clip and the slinger. What kind of tools have you made? used? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Pics would be amazing.

Architect, I used a small punch (Think nail set) to move the slinger/seal holder inward SLIGHTLY to be able to get at the snap ring out of the groove. Once that's out, I used a couple of pick hooks to slip in between the shaft and the slinger/seal holder & work it out of the case race. Then, it's just a matter of putting the seal & holder in so the groove SHOWS SLIGHTLY, put the snap ring in the race so it's held firm. Take a socket that just fits the i.d. of the race, and tap the ring inward until the ring snaps in place. That places the seal & holder right up against ring on the other side, keeping the end play of the roller cages set. Doc

If the cases have never had the slinger removed there is little chance of getting it out with hooked picks. Some require a press to remove.
