Herb did more research than anyone at the MoCo has ever done. Herb deals is facts. Not old wives tales. He hears a story then he researches it through public records to find the truth.

Herb's earlier book on H-D from 1930 to 1941 is a fabulous work as well. Lots of inside stories directly from folks who were there at the time. Cool old pictures also.

Yes, Herb is a hero in my book. I have both of the His books mentioned here and refer to them and reread them from time to time. He was also involved in another publication which I have, Classic Harley-Davidson, full of great pics.

"Harley-Davidson, 1930-1941" is my favorite H-D book. That book captures an atmosphere, and a time period that is very interesting to me. When I open that book, I can't put it down. I only wish it was from 1915-1949.

And if I remember correctly, Herb is now working on a new book. Something about racing.... I believe he was here asking if anyone had pertinant information. Can't wait until it's published..... that's TWO books I'm waiting for...!

Herb was also researching the current whereabouts of the actual "First Harley-Davidson". The one that C.H. Lang bought from its third owner, Steven Sparough, and had on display at his Chicago dealership. He once mentioned he was on its trail but was afraid it would would have a sad ending. I never heard anymore about it.

I got a special kick out of Herb's 30-41 book because I grew up in Northern Illinois and was familiar with some of those places and names. I thought I heard at one time he was doing a book on the Panhead era.
