Thread: 1953 Harley Panhead For sale

  1. 1953 Harley Panhead For sale

This is just down the street from me. From this one picture, what is it worth and what looks right and wrong with it? I may have to go take a look.

New top end, owned since 04, Panhead City in Rome Ga had it at one point.

    Thanks!

As far as value, you are on your own.
As far as correct, it isn't very
Wrong rear fender, oil tank, gas tanks, front fender, kicker pedal and arm, kicker cover, black cylinders and tappet blocks, fork panel, throttle (probably entire bars), air cleaner, lots of non stock chrome pieces.
I'm sure there is lots more...

Getting an early Hydra-Glide correct isn't real hard, but it isn't real easy either. It looks like all the sheet metal is not correct. The rear fender for sure, the tanks look repro, and the front fender is later. Like Robbie said, you could go on and on about what isn't right, but I think you could safely assume, whoever built this bike used a credit card, and a telephone to do it. If you want a good '53, you'll be spending a lot of time and money on ebay. . . . Unless you can get it cheap, but from what I've seen, people who do a bike like that, think they're worth the same as a real 1953.

One of the first places I look is the speedometer. Not only is the real deal (with cable) worth about a grand, a cheap aftermarket in its place usually sets the tone for what the rest of the bike will be. I will throw out a value of 8-9 grand if the frame is legit and the engine numbers look good. My guess is the seller wants 12 to 15k.

Greasy, If you buy this. It will cost you 3-4 times to get it correct....also you will probably end up building a new workshop too.

A little more on the bike, it sounds as though just about everything is incorrect. Bendix carb, 4 speed tank shift, new top end, pistons heads valves etc. The case has been re-stamped and he did get it running. The tank is new, it had a 50 tank when he got it. Unfortunately it was sold to him as original.

My big question, he says the bike is titled to the motor and there are no frame numbers. Should a 53 have frame numbers? If so where are they located. He said the frame looks correct and has sidecar mounts.

I have no business looking at another bike right now but a new workshop sure does sound nice!

It looks like frame numbers started in 1970. Anything else I need to consider based on these pics? He said it took about 30 kicks to get it going after sitting for a year.

    Consider finding a different bike.
