    Couple Of Finish Questions 51FL

Hey More questions for the 51 Im doing .

Could you order the Bike Black Lower Legs And Stainless Headlight Trim , Or Would it be Black .

By Polished do the mean actually ''Show'' Or Just a ''Brushed Finish ''

I just Picked up a set of 49 Sliders and Beforing doing anything i wanted to know the best way to bring them back to there original finish .

Palmers book confuses me in the appendix in the back it says the OIL TANK is painted the standard color of the bike . But all the OP Pans popping up have black oil tanks ??

That's correct. And they are also sand-cast.

On commercial (Police, Servi-Cars, Commercial delivery, etc) units with black sliders all the headlight trim and cowbells are also black. '49 was the only year that black was standard, after that the standard finish was polished on all bikes equipped with one of the trim packages. The painted sliders existed all the way through the '60s. There were not painted sliders and polished tins, or painted tins and polished sliders.
Don't put those '49 sliders on your '51. Plenty of guys want them and would trade you far more for them than just another set of sliders.

Most 51's have polished legs and polished stainless trim.
If you have a 51 police bike most have black legs and black tin.
If you have a set of sand cast legs someone with a 49 would like them.
51's have gloss black oil tanks, a few other years have painted tanks.

Check page 520. It reads under "Black-Painted Parts, 1938-1964:" ..., oil tank (BT), ...

What you read on page 598 under "Standard Color-Painted Parts:" was "Tanks, ..." which is in reference to Big Twin Gas Tanks and 45 Gas and Oil Tanks and not Big Twin oil tanks.

Bruce , Thank you . I misread that . Thanks for the clarification. Robbie and 50 Panhead thanks for all the Info . They are the Sandcast version . I dont currently have another set so i may just use them . They cant possibly worth that much more than a Non Sandcast set can they ?. Also how shiny was the polish ? Glass bead and a quick rub on the polishing wheel . Or Show Polish?

If you polish those sliders you destroy the ability for someone to build a correct 49 front end. And yes, they are worth more to the guy that needs them.

Original sandcast sliders are rarer than rare.
