Fuel tank petcok packing

I would like to repack the seals on my tank valves. I was thinking of taking apart a rope seal for a car motor main seal, and using that as a packing. Anyone have a better idea? Stan

There is twisted rope packing available for water faucet stem sealing. I have not tried it.
