Difficult to kick my 80" at times

    Hi guys,
Has anyone ever had this problem where kicking down to start their Chief just won't kick thru.....as in several well intentioned kicks will not turn the motor......it just won't kick over (spongy feel to each stroke down) and then after several exhausting attempts she kicks over and starts and runs just fine.

    Any thoughts, comments are appreciated.

    Tom

Sounds like your clutch is slipping!

    Tom,

When you say "spongy" it leads me to think that your clutch may be slipping.

Hummm, ok, we'll I'll check that, I hadn't thought of that.
    Like dragging?
I mean like I can really kick that kicker hard, (im not bashful kicking her over) and that kicker just bounces not rotating the motor at all!
Thanks guys, I'll check the clutch...

P.s. I'll attempt this like 5 or 7 times then she rotates and pushes thru just fine and starts.

When you say "that kicker just bounces not rotating the motor at all!" is the kicker not moving either? When I read "spongy" I assumed it was following through but not spinning the motor.

C.o., so when I press on the kicker as if trying to start the motor ( full body downward manly kick) the kicker feels spongy, in other words it moves "somewhat" but like it has TONS of compression and I am unable to push the kicker thru to rotate the motor.
When I attempt this " several times" the motor does not kick thru at all, the kicker moves feeling "spongy" but then for no real reason it kicks thru and generally the motor starts just fine. (provided the ignition is on)
Full retard, when it starts, I advance the ignition and she settles into a nice idle and I ride off into the sunset.
But if I have to shut her off, it is a crap shoot if it kicks over easy or hits this difficult near impossible to rotate the motor mode.
    Thanks

O.K. now I get ya! I'm now wondering if you have one or even a couple of badly worn or chipped teeth on your starter (sector) gear. The next time it happens try depressing the clutch pedal and kicking it through. Then give it another normal try. If it's all better then it's likely a gear tooth problem.

When was the clutch last done ?
If your engine is not rotating,? If you feel minimal compression, Sounds like the clutch.
