question regarding rear speedo drive fitment for Corbin on '46 Chief

The "ears" on the inside of the rear wheel speedometer drive don't engage with the notches in the hub on my 1946 Indian. So, I'm thinking:
    a) wrong speedo drive, or
    b) the "ears" could have been flattened out slightly and simply need to be tweaked back into shape

I don't think I've got a problem with the hollow axle being too long, I'm using a new one from Greer's but it matches up perfectly (except for the worn race) with the original.

The drive wasn't on the bike when I got it, it was in a bag, and it says "27" tires" on it for some reason.

    Any help is appreciated!drive ears.jpgdrive rear.jpgdrive fit.jpg

The drive should say 26 tires on it. You need to take it apart and count the theeth. They should be 48 for a 1946 Cheif. If they are not the gear and drive gear are going to need changed or change the drive to the correct one.
The ears on original Indians are 2 1/8". The ones on the Harleys are 1 7/8". Hub looks beat up a little, you may have to grind the ears to fit or heat and bend.

16 inch rim with 5 inch tire equals 26 inch ( 5x2=10+16=26"). Your housing(which is the same) is for 18 inch rim(2x4.50-tire=9+18=27 inch. Check the worm gear tooth count as the previous poster said. Housing is the same only the gear is different. Easy on the grease - the tabs break off easily.

i had one of my tabs break for that same reason. i was able to silver solder it and it has been fine ever since . sometimes if your speedo cable is not routed correctly it will also fail as it binds inside the cable housing

I like it when things turn out to have a logical explanation!

Thanks for all the answers, I'll be into it tonight after work.
