Thread: Boattail Harleys

    Boattail Harleys

A few years ago I bought an old, original paint green boat-tail seat from a Harley Sportster. I know these seats were offered for a short time for Big Twins and Sportsters, but most people took them off and tossed tham as they were pretty unattractive.

Anyone know what years these were made and in what quantities?

    Thanks.

Buzz, the boattail Sportster was '70 and 71. The boattail Superglide, aka Nightrain was 71 and 72. The BT boattail is quite different from the Sportster was made in more quantity I believe, but they all got thrown away about as fast which makes them rare today.

Wow, you offering a seat or whole bike?

    Any idea on price?

Hmmm: I've never sold any of my oldies. I have one '71 that is "altogether there" which I won't sell. I have another pretty much there with some mods. It had the boattail removed - but I do have it.

I am traveling for the next 5 weeks but, let me think about a price.

    Sorry Dave,
The boattail was 1971 ONLY. No 1970 models had it. I have the sales brochures and parts books to back it up.

Chris, If I'm not mistaken, the Sportster boattail seat hardware has -70 part numbers and was first available as an option on the 1970 Sportster.

52097-71 is the part number for the FX boat tail. There was no FX in 1970.
The Boat Tail was available as an accessory on the 1970 Sportster. It was not available on a production machine.

Hmm. In my 61-71 parts book, it shows the boattail (just the fiberglass piece) as part #52095-70 and says it is for 70-* XLH, XLCH

No disagreement on the FX boat tail. I think it's undisputable that it was 71 and 72.
And looks like we have agreement on the Sporty with 1970 being the first year as an optional accessory.

I have been collecting bits for a 71 XLCH boattail for years. One day I will have to get the bike.
