Pinpoint the year and model of this Harley...

This is a pic of my Uncle and Father. One had an Indian, the other had a Harley. This pic was taken I think in the mid 40's....is it a 30-32? or 36 or newer?

Looks like a '31 or '32 to me. Pretty beat up too. Looks like someone put some hard miles on it! Hard to see many details in that picture.

    Here's your photo, Gator:

Because of the changes made to it (the missing headlighting, toolbox, etc.) by the time the photo was taken, can't nail it down closer than that it's pre-1934 Harley VL. The fenders changed dramatically (were "streamlined") in 1934.

Let it run, here, tho, and maybe someone will see a year-by-year detail to allow us to pin it down closer, Gatorxxx.

As I told you over on on ShovelheadUS last week, Gator, Greybeard52 there pretty much nailed it. It's a Harley 74, V model (there were a bunch of variants on the registration papers and stamped on the cases: VC, VD (!) VS, VLC, VLD, VLE, etc.) depending upon pistons fitted, iron or aluminum, compression ratio, sidecar equipped, intended for "commercial use," and all. They're all commonly lumped together as "Vee Ells."

The drive chain being on the bike's left identifies it instantly as a "Big Twin" 74, not a smaller-built 45. The fenders make it 30-33. The model "VLH" 80 Flatheads, with different heads and cylinders, weren't introduced until 1936, the last year for the V's.

First year V-model, 1930, distinguished by the small, twin headlights:

That taillight wire ain't s'posed to stick up like that, tho!

And the rear fender isn't shaved to accommodate that fat 16" rear wheel either.
