Some Diesel (2 stroke) engines will run backwards.

Harley golf carts run backwards, thats how they go in reverse, the switch runs the starter motor backwards, and the engine runs backwards.
Goes just as fast in either direction.

3406 CAT, which is a 4 stroke will run backwards too. Big problem is that the oil pump will starve when running backwards and wipe out the rod and main bearings if allowed to run very long.

    CZ/Jawa were notorious for it.

You are correct and they run very well for a large 2 stroke engine. I miss mine.

You can push start your ride any time there is not enough battery power for the starter. While trucking one time I had the truck engine die on a hill. I could put it into reverse, let it roll backwards and pop the clutch to get it started. In the mountains up by the Los Alamos National Lab

Had a 180cc yamaha that would do that. Once warm and shut off, just a touch on the starter button and it would start backward. And the gen light would stay on, being a warning. First time it happened was a surprise, at a stop light. After that, it was a stunt! heh heh.

I just got reminded that some of them 45 three wheelers that in Albuquerque the police used to give parking tickets. That Harley Davidson model had a reverse. That makes me think one could put it in reverse and push start it just like you could push start an Ironhead with points.
