Re: Bar End Screw Won't Budge

As an update - I have a buddy that is an auto mechanic that is bringing home a draglink socket tonight - Picked up some Blaster today as well. Should be on my way - I'll probably spray it down tonight and leave it for tomorrow evening before I try to break it loose. Didn't get the bars today so I might as well let it sit for the night, spray it again tomorrow morning and hope that I have a busy night replacing buckhorns with speedster bars tomorrow night.

I like the penetrating oil Aero Kroil. The wisdom of the list is well on display in this thread!

Re: Bar End Screw Won't Budge

I like to use just a wrench to get them loose. Try grinding the open end of a wrench to the same width as the screw's slot. It gives you a ton of leverage and works a lot better than trying to keep a long tool set up straight and parallel to the handlebar end. good luck!

Anyone ever run into a stuck bar end screw and have a trick on getting it out?

Yeah, you guys DO know what your are talking about!! Imagine that (Hope the sarcasm comes across as intended) Just kidding, I know you all do and I appreciate every bit of the help!!!

And Yes, the bars came from Faber - In my lacking knowledge they look great, nice finish and came to me quickly in the mail.

So I made some good progress tonight. I cleaned up the rats nest of wires a little (the ones that I could...). All I have to say is that I will never be able to follow the 'black' wire around the bike... really, they are all black, with a couple of yellow and red ones thrown in there.

The best part about the whole deal is I learned a lot tonight! Never had the bars off and to take them all the way down and seeing how it all works was a real treat.

I got the 'easy' one back on (not all the way set, but on) tonight and will finish the other one tomorrow. Didn't feel like running wires at 12:30 AM, so I'll start back tomorrow. Had a small issue getting the cable back through the new bars, had to stick a flat head down the end to help it round the bend of the bar. Looks like I'll have to figure out how to shorten the throttle cable some to take the slack out since these bars are shorter than the buckhorns (something that didn't really cross my mind when starting this, but hey - it's all a learning game!)

If you made it this far in my rambling, here are a couple of pics from my phone that I took. I have quite a few more from my real camera, I'll post those up sometime later.

Re: Bar End Screw Won't Budge

So I am on my phone typing this so please excuse being breif...

I am on my way to the store to get some wire end connectors to get me by for now, but I have a couple of questions to finish this up this evening.

I put the cables up in the bars and placed the set screws in the middle of the circle stops that is on the upper end, was this assumption correct? Made sense, but just wanted to check...

Cables are needing to be shortened - I assume I am just cutting off the sheath to length, adjusting things up and then cutting the cable after that to keep some length at the end?

How much grease should I put in the grip area? Load it up or just coat it enough and that will be good??

Sorry for basic questions... First timer and just want to make sure I am not going to have to redo anything.
