How Much Grease

The other day when I was over picking up some tools at the shop, I grabbed a grease gun so I could lube up the wheels on my KH.

How much should I put in there?? I figure I don't want to put too much in there as it would gush out the sides and onto the brakes... I tried to look over the K model riders manual and there really isn't anything in there but a couple of images showing the hub cut away, a part that tells you to do it ever 1500 miles and not to over-grease.

I also tried to look over the Palmer book using Google Books and didn't see anything in there either (probably part of the pages that are not shown online). Can someone point me to a resource or tell me how much/little grease I should try to pump into the hub??

Re: How Much Grease

I put 2 pumps in each one today before my ride - I can still stop so I guess all is good...

After reading Bigincher's post about rebuilding a star hub, kind of makes me want to tear the hubs on my KH apart this winter and do it up right since I don't know what/if anything has been done or when it was last done.

Re: How Much Grease

Black KH,
Don't confuse star hubs with K hubs, they are different creatures. From the pics of your bike the rear is later Sportster ( from the 70s!) so a K parts book will be incorrect for it for '55, yours is like a '56 and later type. Your hubs are dead easy to service. I would recommend NOT filling with a grease gun. Take the wheels off, remove, clean, and inspect the bearings. They are all ball bearings, front and rear. If they are good re-pack them with high grade grease, re-assemble them and you will be good to go for many thousands of miles. If you service them regularly (every 20K or so) you will never need that grease gun. There are no shims, adjustments or any other issues to think of. The center spacer and the retainers are all there is. Bearings are available from any bearing house or good auto parts store. You should be able to do it all in a day even never having done it before.
