Buzz Kanter Hand Starting 1930 Indian Four

Here is a quick look of my latest accomplishment (yes, I know, but it was a thrill to me).

For all the detail, visit the on-line magazine blog on this site (click on "Classic Harley & Indian Motorcycle Magazine" link near the top of this page).

Thanks Dean for doing the camera work and not laughing at me for my mistakes.

Atta boy, Buzz! For a minute there, I was worried for your arm, but when that thing decided to fire, Man she was running! Sweet sounding machine, too!

Buzz,
You had better learn to hold the starter crank all the way down till the engine stops moving. It can kick back and break an ankle, or in your case, wrist.

What? German coils on an American Indian motorycle? No way! The ignition is a home made affair a previous owner (and friend of mine) built out of GM and Jaguar car parts. He is literally a rocket scientist (ex-NASA).

Must work super!
The original setup was a Bosch Magneto? Like the one used in the old Ford Model T?

Re: Buzz Kanter Hand Starting 1930 Indian Four

On our short ride after Buzz's hand crank (I was on my 58 pan) we got lots comments at the gas station and the coffee shop. Can't remember that many people stopping, looking and asking. It was a entertaining to say the least. Here's what I remember.....

1) Not one but 2 different guys dilligently pointed out the electric starter on Buzz's Indian!! They couldnt locate it on my '58
2) One guy said with a smile, "I love the way they smell" (I liked him) Buzz quickly pointed out that it must be coming from my '58, since Indian's don't smell.
3) Another guy came right up and said, "how much is that thing worth?" To which Buzz replied in a very serious way, "I got offered $300 once". Then he asked again, to which Buzz replied "No idea, its not for sale". Then he tried to open up and shared a story (and I think the value - this guy was all about price!) of his vintage muscle car, and asked a third time. Buzz finally broke down and gave him a ballpark range. The guy seemed unmoved and left.
4) I think there were at least 3 or 4 "What year are those?". I told one guy that the modern bike was a 1958 Harley -- he looked confused.
5) One or two folks were fascinated with the suspension springs under the seat of the Indian 4. Of all the incredible parts on the Indian 4, I loved how the seat springs were getting all the attention -- that and the electric starter of course.

Tank of Gas......$5, Cup of coffee........$1.50, Comments like the ones above.......priceless!

Hunh? What electric start on the Indian Four? I've owned the motorcycle for a few years and never noticed it. Still can't find it no matter how hard I look
