Question on Linkert

I have a M51 Linkert on my 42 UL, I've tried to adjust it to the manual specs but it just doesn't want to fly that way. When the high-speed needle is turned out to the recommended setting it sputters and pops terribly I turned it in slowly til in bottomed out and it still runs and still pops but not as badly, I backed it off two clicks and it starts popping bad again. Also when I shift and decelerate it backfires constantly....

What do you guys recommend??

Re: Question on Linkert

I have maybe an idea. Those carburators have three injectors, one high speed (left) one idle or low speed (right) and one fixed one inside the housing. That fixed one is sometimes clogged, or even closed with a stud. Look at that fixed injector and see you have the right number for your UL. I can`t remember what number, but Paps or Sarge they know) (Dismount the carburator).

Re: Question on Linkert

First things first --- check that the intake seals are performing properly. Your symptoms describe a classic intake leak. Easiest way to check that is to squirt some kind of accellerant around the intake seals/manifold nuts while the motorcycle is sitting at idle. Any change in the RPMs indicates a defective intake seal. I have used gasoline to do this, but the number and intensity of gasps from the alramed readers has prompted me to use a somewhat less volotile substance. Some people say WD-40, maybe BrakeKleen, or Ether (starting fluid).

Re: Question on Linkert

Big: With due respect to you, gentleman: NEVER, never use ,,starting fluid" so called ether!!!! I`ll try to explain: Diesel and gasoline and petrol make a ,,slow" exlosion, Ether makes a ,,fast" explosion, causing a suden BANG on your piston head, like a sledge hammer. I have seen truck and car engines totally destroyed by that ,,ether starting fluid". Bearings, gaskets, pistons etc. etc. It`s a ,,curse" on vintage low compression engines.

Re: Question on Linkert

That's why I always use gasoline. My fireman friends tell me I'm crazy, but there's nothing new about that......

Re: Question on Linkert

I think they changed the formula of WD-40 because of Tater Cannons, I'll try some brake cleaner....

Re: Question on Linkert

hawkeye i agree on a air leak the harley manual tells you to squirt light oil around manifold nuts one at a time if there is smoke out of ex pipe then you know you have an air leak and it is alot safer. if no leaks there then check all obvious points at carb.

Re: Question on Linkert

What about putting a long hose on the propane torch bottle turn it on low, and move it around the intake ....waiting for the motor to speed up. I know you hafta take it slowly... a little at a time letting the gas dispel so it dont accidentally get to the points.

My tater gun lasted 2 hours after assembly. we blasted every tater from our house and the neighbors house, then we stripped all the fruit off all the trees in the neighborhood, and then shot an umbrella up. the 2nd or 3rd time with the umbrella caused a jamm and the gun exploded, caught my beard on fire, ripped most the skin off my thumb... god that was a fun 2 hours....

and THAT is what happens when Unclepsycho AND Crazy Larry get together unsupervised.

Re: Question on Linkert

I have a friend that..... well, let's just say he likes loud bangs. He made a spud gun out of stainless steel pipe, stepped chamber, spark plug as an igniter, which he fires remotely. He uses oxy/acetylene as the propellant. Oh man, that thing will launch a spud!
This is also the same guy that wanted to see if a propane tank would explode, so he build a bonfire out of fenceposts, then tosses a quarter-full propane tank in it. We retreated a couple hundred yards, watched and waited. Oh my gawd, when that thing exploded, it blew the fire completely out, and was launched hundreds of feet in the air. It came down several second later with a thud, a couple hundred yards from the fire. Chunks of fencepost and other debris rained down for two minutes after the blast. Yeah, it was great! This friend of mine, he's the guy that always says "Here, hold my beer, watch this!"

Okay, sorry for the hi-jack.

So I don't know if using propane is such a good idea to test for intake leaks. I'll stick with gas, and HAWKEYE says he'll try BrakeKleen and I think that's a good choice. Or a light oil, as per the manual. I've never tried that, I just didn't want to ugly up my motor like that!
