Re: Question on Linkert

hawk, if you feel like pulling the carb i can loan you a air regulator and block off plate for the manifold. run 5 or 10 lbs into the intake and spray some soapy water around. you'll find the bubbles fast if theres a leak. theres a link to one of cottens sites to explain better than i can.some one on this forum sells the setup for a low price. better than i coulda thrown together. it comes in very handy.

Re: Question on Linkert

Hawkeye-

I have read all the comments on you Linkert problems with interest...doesn't sound like any of them have actually ever adjusted a Linkert carb (just kidding for goodness sake!) You may know all this stuff already, but before you go pulling intake manifolds and the like, try this.

1. Back out both the high and low speed needles and check for damage.
2. If good, return them and turn all the way in.
3. Start your bike, trust me it will start.
4. Back the low speed needle out until the bike is about ready to stall out: Take it back in two clicks...leave it there for now.
5. Still on the kickstand and in neutral of course, give it about half throttle.
6. Back the high speed needle out until it is about to stall, back in two clicks.

This is based on 35 years of riding bikes with Linkert carbs and usually works fine if there are no other major problems. Flatheads and Linkerts are prone to "lean" backfires, not rich ones. It is caused by the combination of a lean burp and retarded spark. If the spark is retarded on deceleration, you will sound like a dump truck with a Jake Brake coming down a hill. Keep your spark advanced as you decelerate and downshift and see if that helps. Also, make your spark plug gap just a teeny, tiny bit tighter than spec. Let me know what happens.
