Indian 101s At Rhinebeck

I brought my 1931 Indian 101 Scout to Rhinebeck and rode it on the 101 Scout club road run yesterday. From what I have heard this is the first road run my bike has completed in 4 or 5 attempts.

It seems the previous owner insisted on running a 12 volt electronic ignition on the 6 volt system. And...well you can guess what happened.

When I bought the bike about 2 years ago we went through it top to bottom and front to back and sorted it out. The old girl ran great all weekend and I guess I put over 100 miles on her Friday and Saturday. Other than some adjustment to the clutch she ran great.

The road run had 7 Indian 101 Scouts and we all had a lot of fun. What a great machine.

That sounds like a whole lot of fun. The 101 Scout is at the top of my wish list.

I put my 101 on the completion table yesterday ,My wife is looking at it as the next step from her 741 from her comments to me. a worry , having owned a few of them in the past ,this ones mine!

Cool. Which do you prefer the stocker or bobber and why?

My Bobber is a Blast to ride up and down the beach. It is only comfortable for a short time for me because of the high bars. The '29 has Sport Scout Bonneville cams, flywheels and top-end on it and it will run alongside a Chief all day. And it is comfortable! It also has a recirculating oil system that I set up on it.

Sounds a bit like Buzz's 101. Tell us more about it as most of us here will never have the chance to ride a bike like yours.

Just found this photo I took at Rhinebeck last year just after we came back from the 101 Association club ride.



There are 6 of the 101s parked in a line in front of the club tent. That's my black one in the front. Looking at this photo reminds me I have to do something about that ugly headlight on my bike.

What a blast to ride with so many other 101 owners around the back country roads surrounding Rhinebeck. I think we rode something like 25 or 30 miles out and back again.

My 741 is the only Springfield era Indian I have ever ridden. Using that as a base, how does the 101 compare. I am thinking the 30.50, although one of the smallest of Indian engines, would compare fairly well in performance due to the benifit of being 20 years newer. On the other hand, they didn't change much. Flat heads are flat heads pretty much. Maybe what I am asking is the seat of the pants feel, power wise. Also how about the 45 Scout?
