| | | Generator 32E alternative 12 Volts alternator with built-in regulator
Hi everyone
I am really new to CAIMAG forum, I live in New Brunswick ,Canada and I am doing a modified 40 Amps Denso alternator that I call the «Poweraythor 32E»to replace the generator model 32E on early Harley, for those who want to stay with their original generator for a correct restoration, I approved you completely and that is your choice to have a machine that is completely original with your 32E generator in front of the engine ,but for those of you who want to optimize their ride to a modern 12 Volts system and ride day and night without problems, there is a solution for you ,after at least 20 years of doing and testing similar units to replace the 65A generator (that I call the «Poweraythor 65A», there was an article talking about it in the American Iron January 2006 in Letters) on later style Harley like the 58 and up Big Twin and Sportster until the last generator one in 83 ,I has sell many units around and in the last two years around the world via eBay, and to tell you the truth I had no return to this date, and from what I heard they are a lot of satisfied customers out there , I had install the shorter version (Poweraythor 65A) of this unit on my generator shovel 67 for the last 20 + years, and this unit had never giving me any problem whatsoever, I am actually doing a bunch of 32E replacement(that was asked by many riders out there if I could come up with a unit to replace the 32E models it is basically a longer version of the 65A with a different bolting pattern) at the same time I am doing a some 65A Poweraythor replacement, for those who have interest in this innovative and very reliable 12 Volts alternator with a built-in regulator, this units will give you the peace of mind to take your bike as a daily riders, and don't have to take care of the charging system again, if you plan to have your ride original again, it is very easy to come back again,if you have questions or comments concerning this unit and you want to contact me via email ,it is saddlebagrail@yahoo.ca ,I will have them on eBay hopefully in fall so the first come first serve, as I am doing them individually as a custom design, I have included some pics of my very last design that would be a replacement for all early Harley using the 32E generator, and excuse me for misspelling or mistakes, English is not my main language, as there might be some mistakes as you read this text,Ray in New Brunswick, Canada

Hi Andy
I did not find any 6 volts alternator that I could modify and I don't think that there are other company other than Denso that I think are making new 6 volts alternator nowadays,it is even hard to find some 6 volts bulbs except from some suppliers in the Harley world and some specific company.
Peoples who are looking for a new alternative mostly go with the 12 volts system that are easy to find anywhere, consider that if you go with a 12 volts you don't have to change your main wiring on your bike,it is already powerful enough to supply the 12 volts to all the electrical of your bike ( 6 volts wiring are bigger than the 12 volts wiring),hope that help,Ray

The problem is if you want retain the stock oil tank, the only 12V battery you can get in there(easily) is the little one, that easily overcharges, and usually doesn't last long.

Andy,
I tinkered a tin box the exact O.D. of an H-2 battery that fits an old repro battery top cover for a lid, and went to a local auto battery supplier when I got one of these alternators. I found a modern sealed 12v battery of 18 amps that fits inside the box, in the rigid oil tank, with a quarter-inch of foam in the back, and one on a side. The new-tech sealed batteries have changed the whole game. No more overflow tubes and acid all over, etc., etc.
There's two inches on the bottom (supports the battery on a piece of rigid poly-foam) with a cut out that fits a 15amp circuit breaker in the hot wire to the whole bike. Have never had a lick of trouble with the electrical system since converting. You could get an even less obvious look by using the top of an H-2 battery on your tin box and wiring the whole thing internally, as has been suggested.
As you can see from the photos, Ray Duguay of New Brunwick does impeccable work. His alternators are things of beauty. I couldn't be happier.

Thanks Sarge for all the good words on my unit,I always try very hard to have a nice and reliable products, and to respond to Andy on battery problems ,I had one customer who had bought one unit from me and he was using a custom alternators for years before that and as he was telling me he had run a sealed battery for years and the battery he was using was one from Hawker Energy models Genesis EP series G12V12ah10EP (this one last 8 years) and now is his using one from Adventure Power UBTZ14S 12Volts 11.2ah that one is made by Universal Power Group and those two batteries fit in the horseshoe tank(I think you have the horseshoe tank?) without problem(with some small rubber gasket used as shims) and they are maintenance free and they normally last very long, the Genesis battery size is 3 1/4 thick x 5 1/4 high x 6 3/4 inches long and the one from Adventure Power is 3 1/2 thick x 4 1/2 High x 5 7/8 long, hope that help, you could check on their respective site to find more info,Ray

i got this one with my 45, but it didn't work. later i had it rebuilt and put it on my pay. it only uses half of the outer case with the stator sticking halfway into the old generator housing, the armature is welded to half of the original input shaft with a press fit collar. no one has ever been able to give me an answer as to where it came from. it works great, i cal it the genernator |

What stops water from getting inside it during wet weather?

Absolutely nothin'. And it makes absolutely no difference. It's an alternator. Has no mechanical brushes, was made to run under horrendous conditions. Makes no difference to it. And if it did, the alternator is a rebuildable/replaceable part, used on little garden tractors.
