Hand Clutch Rod on Foot Clutch Vintage Harley JD

Buzz,

I see your 24 JDCA and the one on display at Barber both appear to have a hand clutch lever connected to the clutch pedal by a rod linkage. I have not noticed that on the later models. Am I missing something?

I believe 1925 was the last year for this set up. I think the part that sits on top of the tranny that kept the tranny locked into gear was brought back in '27 or '28, but there was no hand lever for the clutch. If I am wrong I am sure someone will correct me post haste!

Re: My 1924 Harley JDCA Motorcycle

Actually I have often wondered the purpose of this hand lever for the foot clutch on my old Harley JD. I know they were available only on certain year Harleys.

Anyone know the logic or use of this on the vintage Harley JD?

logic is you had one brake your right side right foot holds rear brake left foot depresses clutch and face holds bike off ground with hand lever you have one foot free for balance face stays away from ground

Hi
The hand Clutch lever disappeared after 1925 " I had the same on my 1918 and found it dam near impossible to use ,But try taking of on an uphill right turn (left in aus) with a solo bike and you see the reason behind it ,Probably worse when left turn start of here because the clutch foot would be on the ground, however the lever always seems to be out of reach !
regards Phil
