I haven't tackled the problem yet.
I went to my deepest resource and Stett said, "Hey Kirk, I would have to trace it out, best advice is to check from start to finish. THANX STETT!"
Welcome to Stett's - Custom Harley-Davidsons!
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
My list of problems are:
1. The brake lamp won't light, but I have instructions for troubleshooting from the Brake Lamp topic and I'll post pics.

2. The OIL dash-lamp won't light.
I'll trace the wiring from the generator, to it's sources, or the other way around, from the source to destination, if it seems more logical, once I have the dash cover off and the diagram in front of me.
[Using different colored highlighters on the cloth conduit book illustrations helps as a harness locater].

Any OIL-lamp fault-finding suggestions before I start out would be welcomed.

So, I fire up the knuck in the garage to check the carb adjustment, and then go for a ride. Starts up fine, no wierd noises. Shut it down. Go inside to put on my boots and grab a helmet. Rolled it to the end of the short driveway.
Then, fired it up on the first kick. I heard a new clutch sound, kind of a rattle/whirring sound. So then I engage it into 1st gear, and toe down, to ride off, right? Wrong...nothing happens. I try again, rock the bick to make sure, and try to move on. Nothing. I shut the bike off. Then, a few moments later, try to kick it again. Nothing, no compression; the kicker just rolls through with no resistance. The pressure plate, springs, and collar spin around, nothing else, (primary cover was off).
Maybe the clutch hub nut lockwasher/nut loosened up, or the hub key sheared off, is what I'm thinking. Am I on the right track? Thanks, Bones

I've got to get it back together and pass it along. I've had it way too long in storage and it's doing nobody any good.

I'm not new to bikes, but am new to the beauty and appreciation of classic American Iron. I've ridden the quick import jobs long enough, and have seen the light.:D

My question for you guys today is, what am I looking at here? I'm looking for details and year (guesses?) of the parts used to create this beast. I caught my inspiration when I laid eyes on this bike about a year ago on display at the mall in Denver.

I'm told:
-the frame is likely from the 20's (22)
-it's a knucklehead
-springer front end from the ???
-tank is from about 1916
is this right?

I was told this is a model 741 military Scout engine. Year unknown. No serial number on crank case. Serial numbers on cylinders tell me it's a 30.50 cu. in. displacement.
I was told with some carburetor work this does run. It has one broken spark plug and the distributor cap is missing. One of the fins on the head is broken but it is a small one. It's been stored inside as long as I've owned it. I bought it for a restoration project but now I need to let it go.

With the Oct. 2010 issue comes the blow-in Subscription Renewal letter. Fair enough, I’ll do what I can to keep Buzz and crew in the lifestyle they have become accustom to.

Figured I’d do it online while here at work, hard for them to tell what I’m doing anyway! LOL Well, the AIM online renewal thingy at ezsubscription.com had other plans for me! The site puked all over itself this morning. Having not had enough coffee, I pull the normal stupid user trick and clicked SUBMIT multiple times. Get a bigger hammer, right?!!? Then it strikes me; good job jerk, you probably just renewed multiple times! Not that I don’t want the mag for years to come, but I had visions of 10 concurrent issues all for the same year arriving for hundreds of dollars! LOL

Ok, time to get help. Called the 877 number;
First call got dropped.
Second call gets stuck in the greeting queue, “Thank you for calling American Iron…”
Oh good, here we go! In the back of my mind I thinking that’s nice, Buzz is out riding the Motorcycle Cannonball. Maida is DJ-ing the “boss is away” party and no one can get a subscription renewed!
Third call gets answered by something I barely recognized; a pleasant-sounding American woman! Whoa, what is this?!!? American-based customer support, I LOVE IT! THANK YOU!
“Sam” could not have been more pleasant and helpful!
Looking forward to another year of AIM!

Passing lights question

The passing light on one side of my headlight needed to be replaced to pass inspection.

The passing light on one side of my headlight needed to be replaced to pass inspection.

So I replaced both of the sealed beam passing lights (located on either side of headlight) with the new version that has the clear plastic lens and the new bright replaceable bulb inside it.

It was an easy swap. Just had to cut off the terminal forks and replace them with stake-on terminals that slide onto the little wiring harness they come with.

However, I notice that when I turn on the brights on my headlight, these two passing lights dim way down.

Is this the way they are supposed to operate? Or is there something mixed up in the wiring somehow?

Here's a picture to show what I am looking at:

To explain it better... When the head light is in the normal low beam setting and I turn on the passing lights, all of the lights are at full brilliance. But when I switch the headlamp to bright high beams, it goes on, but the two side lamps dim way down to a mere candle flicker. Then I turn the brights back down to low beam and the side lights come back up bright again.

Is there a way to have these two lights stay bright regardless of high beam or low beam setting on the head light? Maybe I need a larger gauge wire to feed this?

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

Bonus question:
Why do they call them "Passing Lights"?

Are you really only supposed to use them when passing someone? I figured I'd run them when ever...

Thanks.

Hello Ladies and Gents,
Found the forum by accident, did some lurking, think you all are a fine bunch so here I am. I am hoping to make some friends and get back into classic bikes, as I have been out of anything close to active for a while.
Have ridden HD since my first, a '66 M50 Sport. Currently have a few older ones and am working, slowly, on a resto of a '42 WLA. I love anything two wheeled, from Honda to Harley and anything in between, but the classic American bikes are what I have owned and enjoy most.
Buzz, how about a newsstand version of a classic bike magazine? I have just about all your old ones, all of the old Indian Illustrated magazines, Hot XL, OBJ, and the newsstand specials you used to put out. I know it is a hard time for publishing, but I bet the old bike fraternity would not let you down if you put another special out there in hardcopy on the newsstand. The Net is nice, but nothing beats print. Oh yeah, what the heck ever happened to Super Hunky from OBJ? He was a riot! I used to love reading his stuff.
I look forward to chatting with you all!
George

I bought a basket knuckle chopper a little over a year ago and am whittling away at making it a fairly stock period bike. Today I'm taking the heads apart to bead and paint them and get the rocker enclosures dechromed before parkerizing them. One cover was off and the top collar was off of the valve but everything else was assembled. So I take it apart and drive that guide out. It comes out and looks a little odd. The PO or somebody put the lower collar under the guide before installing the guide, so it was between the guide and the head. To weird.
