I saw PJ-52's post today, and saw how he was adjusting clutch spring tension. I always hated trying to measure that with scales, and calipers so I made a gauge years ago. Easy enough to make with a file, but easier with a milling machine.

A Susan B. Anthony dollar coin is 1-1/32" for 5 plates and 'mouse trap eliminator'. A quarter is 31/32" for 4 plates and foot clutches. Eric needs to ride his bikes, not spend all his time in the shop! LOL! Doc

If I had to choose between my shop, or riding my bike on suicide parkway here in Sarasota, I'll pick my shop. My shop is like a sanctuary that smells like heaven (i.e. motorcycles). There's useless, ancient crap (to everyone else) hanging everywhere, I can curse as loud as I want, and I listen to classical music, which everyone else hates. I'm happy as a clam in there. Actually, I've been riding my bike quite a bit lately, and I always ride it when I vote, as I did yesterday.

setting the spring pressure by the book is great idea if you have nos oem parts if not then good luck. I usually have to find a spot where it is happiest. why are clams so damn happy? I went into a bar one night called the bearded clam it was all females in the place and none of them would talk to me. it would of hurt my feelings if I had any.

To me the measurements are merely a baseline to setting the clutch. I don't pay much attention to them in real life. 1" is close enough to start on early or late, but I set the spring pack so that the pressure plate rotates flat and true with the clutch disengaged. That doesn't always mean the same distance in all areas depending on how perfect the parts are (usually not). I also use the late soft springs and 5 plate clutches in everything. I don't like the half plate and riveted linings much. And the springs can be run even a bit softer if using aftermarket plates with more friction available.

Nothing is carved in stone. A baseline is all I'm after at the start.

Only a chowder head would do that.
